A dog's failure to come when called can stem from several factors, including a lack of consistency, insufficient rewards, and distractions. To address this, owners can improve their dog's recall by using specific commands, providing ample rewards, and training in a calm environment.

Reasons Why Your Dog Doesn't Come When Called
1. Lack of Consistency
Consistency is paramount in dog training. Every dog trainer emphasizes the importance of consistency, which means maintaining a uniform approach between you and your dog. This includes having consistent training goals and behavioral expectations. A higher level of consistency between you and your dog makes the training process smoother and more effective. Because we can't verbally explain to our dogs what we want them to do, we have to set clear, unchanging goals, allowing our dogs to gradually progress in the direction we want.
2. Insufficient Rewards
Many people mistakenly believe that dogs obey because of their love for their owners. However, this is not accurate. While dogs do love their owners, they are also motivated by rewards. If the rewards are not appealing enough, a dog may ignore you. Therefore, in the beginning, we use the most enticing rewards to ensure that our dog listens to our commands.
3. Distractions
Dogs are naturally curious creatures. If their surroundings are full of stimuli, they will have difficulty concentrating, potentially ignoring their owners unless they've been specifically trained to focus. Outside noises or the smell of the neighbor's cooking can easily distract a dog. Once distracted, they may become unresponsive. Therefore, it’s usually better to train your dog in a quiet environment with minimal distractions.
