Why Doesn't My Purebred Pekingese Bark?

A Pekingese that doesn't bark might be due to its natural quiet disposition or a timid personality. However, owners can use methods like food enticement and leveraging their Pekingese's dependency to encourage barking.

If your purebred Pekingese doesn't bark, it could be because they are naturally less inclined to do so, which is related to their temperament. Proper training can help modify this behavior.

Understanding Pekingese Temperament

Pekingese are known for their dignified and often independent nature. They aren't typically a vocal breed like some other dogs, and this can contribute to their quieter demeanor. While they may not bark readily, they are very alert and can be protective of their family. This makes them good watchdogs, even if they aren't always barking.

How to Train Your Pekingese to Bark

Training can be effective in encouraging your Pekingese to bark, especially if you want to be able to communicate more effectively with your dog, or simply enjoy a bit more noise!

Food Enticement Training

1. Begin by holding food to get your Pekingese excited about the treat. Then, give a verbal command and hand signal for 'bark'. If your Pekingese barks, give the treat as a reward. Repeat this many times until they associate the command with the action. Once your dog has formed a basic conditioned reflex, stop using the food lure, and use just the verbal command and hand signal.

Dependency Training

2. Use your Pekingese's attachment to you to your advantage. Take your Pekingese to a new and quiet environment and tether him. Try to playfully entice your dog to bark. After this, move away a bit and call your dog's name, then give the 'bark' command. If your dog barks, give a reward and let your dog roam around for a while.

Using the Defensive Reflex

3. Use your Pekingese’s natural defensive reaction to your advantage. Bring your Pekingese to the training area and have an assistant walk towards them in a secretive manner to provoke a reaction. The goal is to encourage your dog to chase and bark. When your Pekingese barks, give the bark command.

Consistency is key. Always use the same commands and reward system. Be patient, as some Pekingese may be more stubborn than others. Always use positive reinforcement rather than punishment.
