Essential Basic Obedience Training for West Highland White Terriers

Basic obedience training for West Highland White Terriers, commonly known as Westies, includes commands like 'sit,' 'down,' 'shake,' 'come,' and 'beg.' These foundational skills are crucial for a well-behaved and happy dog.

Training Methods for Westie Basic Commands

Here's how you can effectively train your Westie these essential commands:

1. Sit

Gently guide your dog into a sitting position by pressing down on their hindquarters. Simultaneously, say the command "sit". Use a hand signal: extend your right arm to the side, bend your forearm upwards forming an 'L' shape, palm facing forward. Keep your hand on their rear, maintaining the sit for 10-15 seconds before releasing. Repeat this training daily. Consistency is key and most dogs will grasp this command in a few days.

2. Down

Use one hand to gently press on your dog's back, applying light pressure to encourage them to lie down. With the other hand, gently extend their front legs forward. Give the command "down". The accompanying hand signal is: raise your right hand and extend it forward with your palm facing down. Hold the position briefly and then release. If your dog performs the action correctly reward them with a treat. If not repeat the steps. Keep training sessions to around 15 minutes. Consistency is key and positive reinforcement is essential.

3. Shake/Paw

Hold a treat in one hand and use your other hand to gently lift your dog's right paw. Gently shake their paw while saying "shake" or "paw". Maintain the grasp for a few seconds, then release. Repeat this action until your dog understands the command, then reward them with the treat.

4. Come

First, get your dog's attention by calling its name. Then, show them a toy or treat. Give the command "come". Your hand signal is to extend your left arm to the side, palm facing down. If your dog doesn’t come try moving backwards, clapping your hands while squatting or running in the opposite direction of the dog. When your dog comes to you, offer praise or a treat.

5. Beg

Gently hold both of your dog's front paws. Lift them up so that your dog is standing on their hind legs. Gently bring their front paws together while shaking them up and down. Give the command "beg". Maintain the action for several seconds then release their paws. Repeat this until the command is learned. Do not introduce any other new commands before your dog learns this one as it can cause confusion.

Consistent and patient training is the most effective method for teaching a Westie these basic commands. Ensure positive reinforcement with treats, praise, and plenty of affection. Remember that training should be a positive experience for both you and your pet. It should not be longer than 15 minutes each training session.
