Is a Siberian Husky a Medium or Large Dog? Can You Own One in Wuhan?

Siberian Huskies are classified as medium-sized dogs. Male Huskies typically weigh between 45-60 pounds and stand 53-58 centimeters tall at the shoulder when fully grown. Females tend to be slightly smaller, weighing 35-50 pounds with a height of 51-56 centimeters. Unfortunately, owning a Husky is not permitted in Wuhan, China.

Huskies, originally bred as sled dogs, require substantial exercise. While a medium-sized breed, their energy levels are comparable to those of larger dogs. Without sufficient daily activity, Huskies are prone to destructive behaviors, expressing their frustration by chewing or 'redecorating' your home. It’s worth noting that the Alaskan Malamute, often mistaken for a Husky, is a larger breed.

Husky Ownership Regulations in Wuhan

According to Wuhan’s pet ownership regulations, only small dogs with a shoulder height under 45 centimeters are allowed within the city limits. Adult Huskies typically exceed this height, generally measuring between 50 and 60 centimeters, placing them firmly in the medium-sized category and making them ineligible for ownership within the city. However, residents in rural areas of Wuhan may be able to keep a Husky.

Despite their often goofy and sometimes mischievous reputation in the domestic pet world, and although they are often included among the three most docile breeds alongside Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers, Huskies remain banned in Wuhan.
