The Ideal Age for Adopting a Miniature Pig as a Pet

Zooplus DE

It's generally recommended to adopt a miniature pig that is around five months old. At this age, they are typically weaned, making them healthier, more robust, and easier to manage. Their physical characteristics are more apparent, allowing for easier identification of healthy individuals, and they still have room to grow.

The reason for recommending five-month-old miniature pigs is that younger piglets are prone to weak immune systems and illnesses. They also tend to be very vocal when separated from their group. Piglets younger than five months are often not fully weaned, which makes their care much more challenging. On the other hand, older miniature pigs may have less aesthetic appeal and could potentially have hidden health issues that may be difficult for the buyer to detect. Moreover, owning an older pig doesn’t provide the same rewarding experience of raising a piglet.

Miniature Pig Care Tips

1. Unlike cats or dogs, miniature pigs do not prefer to relieve themselves inside their sleeping area. Provide them with an enclosure, such as a fenced area with dry straw. This ensures a comfortable sleeping space. Remember to clean up their waste daily to maintain a clean and healthy living environment, reducing the chance of illness.

2. Opt for a miniature pig that has already been weaned, as they have higher survival rates and are much easier to care for. Miniature pigs can be fed with a mix of cornmeal, rice bran, soybean cake, and flour. Alternatively, you can purchase commercial feed formulated specifically for miniature pigs. Younger pigs should be fed about four to five times a day, in small portions, as they have small appetites and can easily overeat. Once they reach over 20 kg in weight, reduce feedings to three times a day, increasing the portion size with each meal.

3. It is important to prevent excessive activity for pet miniature pigs, but make sure they have exposure to sunlight. Allowing them to bask in the sun can make them even more lively and delightful to be around.
