Norwegian Forest cats, as their name suggests, are native to the forests of Norway, a unique breed from the Scandinavian Peninsula with an obscure origin. They share similarities in appearance with Maine Coons and are grouped with Siberian Forest Cats. Due to the harsh and cold environments in which they developed, Norwegian Forest cats have thicker coats and stronger builds compared to other breeds. They are large and athletic with impressive speed. They are also resilient to various weather conditions, and their flowing mane and tail make them a beautiful sight when they move. Norwegian Forest cats tend to be introverted, intelligent, active, and adventurous, possessing an excellent hunting instinct. These characteristics make them not ideally suited for long-term indoor confinement. They thrive best in spacious homes with access to a yard or garden.
