It's generally not recommended to give a four-month-old Teddy (Poodle) a full grooming style. Teddy dogs typically develop their ideal coat for styling around one year old. At this age, they’ve fully grown into their adult body proportions, and their fur has become dense and lush, making them ideal for various adorable hairstyles.
When is the Right Time for Teddy Grooming?
There isn't a strict age limit for when a Teddy can have its first professional groom. Many owners opt for a styling haircut when their Teddy is around 9-10 months old. At four months, a Teddy's body and coat are still developing, and therefore, the results of a full groom may not be ideal. However, owners can still perform regular coat maintenance, which will keep the fur healthy and vibrant, preparing them for a beautiful style later on. This includes basic trims to maintain hygiene and cleanliness.
The Importance of Diet for Coat Health
Teddy dogs, being curly-haired breeds, typically start developing their adult coat between 6-8 months. If they haven’t received sufficient nutrition early on, their coat may lack quality, becoming soft, sparse, and dull. Therefore, feeding Teddy puppies a high-quality diet rich in nutrients is crucial for developing a healthy, beautiful coat. Proper nutrition ensures that their fur absorbs essential nutrients, resulting in a better grooming experience.
Daily Teddy Coat Care Routine
Regular brushing is essential for maintaining a Teddy's coat. It's recommended to brush your Teddy's fur once in the morning and once in the evening, for about five minutes each time. Start from the neck area and gradually move toward the tail, top to bottom. Then, brush from the neck to the shoulder, followed by the back, chest, waist, abdomen, hindquarters, head, and lastly, the limbs and tail. It’s helpful to brush the right side before the left.
Don't Neglect the Undercoat
Many owners only brush the long outer fur of long-haired dogs, neglecting the fine undercoat. Teddy's undercoat is soft and dense, and if not regularly brushed, it can become matted and cause skin issues such as eczema and ringworm. Therefore, always brush layer by layer, and pay special attention to the undercoat.
Typically, after one year, a Teddy can be groomed every three months. The grooming interval may be shorter during the summer and longer in the winter. Generally, three to four grooming sessions per year are adequate. Regular home maintenance between grooming is also necessary and involves bathing, drying, and trimming.
