When it comes to Poodle mixes (often called 'Poodle crosses' or 'doodles'), whether their coat becomes curly is not guaranteed. It largely depends on the genes inherited from each parent breed.
Purebred Poodle puppies are born with curly coats, but their fur appears as loose waves initially. The tighter, more defined curls we associate with Poodles develop gradually as they mature. If you encounter a Poodle with a straight coat, it is highly probable that the dog is not a purebred or has a genetic anomaly. Because of their curly coats, Poodles are prone to trapping dirt and debris in their fur, requiring regular baths. When bathing your Poodle, it's crucial to choose a shampoo specifically formulated for curly coats, otherwise, the curl definition may be compromised.
How to Enhance Your Poodle's Curl
1. Poodle puppies' coats are typically sparse and have soft, loose waves. It generally takes around nine months for them to develop the standard thick, curly adult coat. When they are about six months old, you can trim about a third of their coat to encourage healthy shedding and metabolism. As they age, the coat will naturally become curlier and more beautiful.
2. Use shampoos designed to promote curls. Many dog shampoos now have specific functions. If you use a shampoo that is formulated for volume or sleekness, it will not be beneficial for enhancing your Poodle's curls. It is recommended to use shampoos specially designed for Poodles or curly-coated breeds. These shampoos often contain ingredients that help define curls and add moisture without weighing down the coat.
