Why is My Hamster Walking Lopsided and Tending to Fall to One Side?

Zooplus DE

If your hamster is walking lopsided and easily falling to one side, it's highly possible they've suffered a fracture, likely during their active playtime. Hamsters love their exercise wheels and are prone to falls, and their limbs are quite fragile. If you notice bleeding, you can use Yunnan Baiyao powder to help stop the bleeding.

Hamster bones are particularly delicate. During their care, it's essential to prevent falls from heights to avoid potential fractures. While multi-level cages may look attractive, they pose a greater risk. Opting for a single-level cage is a safer option. So, what should you do if your hamster suffers a fracture?

Emergency First Aid for a Hamster Walking Lopsided

1. Stop the Bleeding

If your hamster is walking with a tilt, first check for any bleeding. If there's bleeding, it's crucial to stop it immediately. Apply iodine to the wound, and then use a bandage or piece of cloth for temporary bandaging.

2. Realignment

When a hamster sustains a fracture, they need to be taken to a professional veterinary clinic. When a bone fracture has caused the limb to be displaced it will cause the hamster to fall to one side. There, a qualified veterinarian will gently pull the limb along its axis, straightening the displaced fracture to facilitate correct bone realignment. Careful attention should be paid to make sure the limb is aligned and that both limbs are the same length.

3. Immobilization

It’s important to properly clean the fracture site. Once the bones have been realigned, a plaster cast or small splint can be used to immobilize the area. When securing the splint, fill the gaps with cotton or padding to prevent rubbing. After the bone has been stabilized, reduce your hamster's activity and allow it to rest for 3-4 weeks before slowly reintroducing exercise. The bandage or splint can be removed after 10-20 days.
