Will Frequent Cuddling Stunt a Puppy's Growth?

It's a common myth that frequent cuddling can stunt a puppy's growth. While cuddling won't physically prevent your puppy from growing, it's generally better not to overdo it. Excessive cuddling can potentially lead to behavioral issues, increased dependency, and even a higher risk of infections.

Why You Shouldn't Cuddle Your Puppy Too Often

1. Dependency Issues: Dogs, like other living creatures, thrive on independence. Too much cuddling can foster an unhealthy level of dependency. While it’s tempting to shower your puppy with affection, remember that dogs are naturally active and need to explore and exercise. Regular walks and playtime are crucial for their development. Ironically, excessive cuddling can sometimes lead to your puppy being less comfortable with handling, making even simple vet visits a challenge. The belief that constant cuddling equals a stronger bond is often misguided.

2. Nail Overgrowth: When a puppy spends too much time being held, its paws don't get the chance to naturally wear down its nails on the ground. This can lead to overgrown nails that may curl inward, causing discomfort or even pain. You’ll then have to commit to regular nail trims to maintain your puppy’s paw health and avoid more serious health complications.

3. Increased Risk of Infections and Parasites: Cuddling increases the skin-to-skin contact between you and your puppy, potentially raising its body temperature. This can create a more inviting environment for bacteria on your puppy's skin, increasing the risk of skin infections. Additionally, puppies, especially those who haven't completed their parasite prevention regimen, may carry fleas, ticks, and even internal parasites like roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms, some of which, like toxoplasmosis, can be contagious to humans. This is why regular deworming and flea/tick prevention for your puppy is critical. You should also practice good hygiene after handling your puppy.
