Can Dogs Eat Sweets? Forbidden Foods You Should Know

Zooplus DE

Dogs can indeed taste sweetness, but not all sweet things are safe for them, and moderation is key. Foods high in sugar can easily lead to excessive weight gain in dogs. It’s crucial to be mindful of the type and amount of sweets your dog consumes.

While dogs can have some sweets, it's vital to be selective and ensure they eat only small amounts. Certain sweets, such as chocolate and ice cream, are absolute no-gos. Chocolate contains theobromine, a substance that is toxic to dogs. Ice cream can cause significant digestive upset, leading to vomiting, diarrhea, and even gastroenteritis. Even safe sweets should be given sparingly, as overconsumption can be harmful.

Foods Dogs Should Absolutely Avoid

Here's a list of foods that are particularly dangerous for dogs:

1. Chocolate

The theobromine in chocolate can cause vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, abnormal heart rhythms, seizures, and in severe cases, death in dogs. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate are the most dangerous.

2. Onions and Garlic

These contain compounds that can damage red blood cells in dogs, leading to hemolytic anemia. Even small amounts can cause severe hematuria (blood in the urine). Avoid giving your dog foods like hamburgers, curries, or soups that contain onion or garlic.

3. Bones

It's generally not recommended to give dogs bones. Large bones can cause esophageal or stomach injuries leading to gastrointestinal bleeding. While some bones can be safe when cooked thoroughly until they are very soft, bone marrow is a good source of calcium, phosphorus, and copper, and chewing on large bones helps clean teeth, it's best to exercise extreme caution.

4. Raw Eggs and Raw Meat

Raw egg whites contain avidin, a protein that can deplete biotin (vitamin H) in dogs. Raw eggs can also contribute to coat discoloration. Both raw eggs and meat can contain parasites and bacteria that can cause diarrhea in dogs.

5. Cow's Milk

The composition of cow's milk differs from dog milk, and it can easily cause diarrhea in puppies. If healthy dogs enjoy it and don’t experience negative symptoms, it can be given in small amounts. It's best to monitor your dog's reaction closely.
