China has over 40 million stray dogs, while the United States currently holds the title for the country with the most dogs, boasting a staggering 75.8 million.

Are you aware of the number of stray dogs in China? The answer is more than 40 million, accounting for about 1/5 of the world’s total stray dog population. Moreover, this number is alarmingly increasing by 1.5 times each year.
The primary reason for the rapid surge in the number of stray dogs is abandonment by owners. For example, the once-popular Tibetan Mastiff, which fetched prices of millions of dollars, was heartlessly abandoned after its mystique faded. These abandoned Mastiffs, lacking management and not being spayed or neutered, have become a major problem in Tibet.
Countries With the Highest Dog Populations
The United States appears to be a haven for man's best friend, with an astounding 75.8 million dogs. Dog ownership is incredibly popular throughout the country, evidenced by the presence of dog parks in almost every major city and town, and numerous dog grooming salons in many areas.
Each state in the US has its own set of dog control laws, with owners responsible for strict adherence. Some cities also have breed-specific legislation, limiting ownership of certain breeds, particularly in cases where dogs have attacked young children and the elderly which can result in fatalities. Animal welfare laws are also strictly enforced nationwide, and those accused of dog abuse can face criminal charges and subsequent penalties if convicted.
The situation in China is in stark contrast, the number of stray dogs and the lack of enforced regulations contribute to the growing crisis of abandoned animals. While the US focuses on responsible pet ownership, including controlling dog populations and protecting animal rights, China needs to address the underlying causes of the growing stray dog populations.
