How to Tell if a Kitten is Hungry and How Often to Feed It

Zooplus DE

If a kitten is constantly meowing or following you around, it’s likely a sign that they are hungry. Typically, young kittens need to be fed every two to three hours; otherwise, they’ll become very hungry.

Assessing Kitten Hunger

You can check if a kitten is hungry by gently feeling its belly and noting the time of their last meal. If a kitten keeps meowing and following you, it's a strong indicator that they need food. Remember, kittens should be fed small, frequent meals with a focus on balanced nutrition.

Feeding Frequency for Newborn Kittens

Newborn kittens that are less than a month old generally need to be fed every two to three hours. If they haven’t been fed for a while and their stomach feels flat, it’s highly probable that they are hungry, and you need to feed them immediately. Prolonged periods without food can cause hypoglycemia, potentially leading to shock or even death. If your recently fed kitten is still meowing and following you, gently feel their belly. If it feels full, avoid feeding them more. Kittens can sometimes overeat if they don't recognize when they are full. The key is to offer small meals frequently and stick to easily digestible food. If a kitten’s belly is still flat and they still won't eat, they might be ill and need a vet.

Feeding Older Kittens

For kittens that are two to three months old, it's recommended to feed them three to five times daily. You can also keep some dry food in their bowls so they can eat whenever they are hungry. If they are picky eaters, try mixing in some wet food or meat-based canned food to entice them to eat. If your kitten refuses to eat for an extended period, or shows signs of vomiting, consult with your veterinarian as soon as possible.
