Will Kittens Still Nurse If the Mother Cat Has No Milk? How to Tell If They're Getting Enough

Even if a mother cat has no milk, kittens will still attempt to nurse. However, when the milk supply is insufficient, kittens will often exhibit certain behaviors. They will persistently cry, appear underweight, and experience slow growth. These signs indicate that the kittens might not be getting enough nutrition, and in such cases, supplementing with artificial feeding is highly recommended.

When a mother cat's milk supply is low, kittens will continue to try to nurse. If they are not getting enough to eat, they will cry incessantly. In such situations, it's crucial for owners to either supplement the kittens with artificial feeding or help the mother cat increase her milk production. Artificial feeding involves ensuring a clean and hygienic environment with suitable temperature and humidity, and using a bottle to feed the kittens with formula. To encourage milk production in the mother cat, you can provide her with a diet of boiled crucian carp in white water supplemented with milk powder and multivitamins, or gently massage her nipples, using appropriate technique and pressure.

Signs of Insufficient Milk Intake in Kittens

If a kitten appears thin, underweight, and shows signs of slow growth, it may be due to malnutrition resulting from insufficient milk intake. Other signs include a decrease in urination and defecation frequency, as well as an increase in the frequency and duration of nursing attempts. If you gently touch the kitten’s face, you may also notice suckling motions. A flat or sunken abdomen in the kitten is another indication that they are not getting enough milk. In such cases, in addition to feeding the kittens with milk replacer, you can supplement their diet with additional nutrients and also try to increase the mother cat's milk supply by providing her with nutritious food and lactation-boosting broths.

Kittens tend to be voracious eaters, and many will continue to nurse even when they are full. Owners should check the kittens’ bellies after feeding. If a kitten’s belly is noticeably distended, it's important to remove the food and prevent overeating, which can harm their health. Regular deworming is also essential, as an excessive appetite can sometimes be attributed to parasites.
