Typically, cats begin to mellow out and become less boisterous around 8 to 12 months of age. Their intense curiosity starts to wane, and they transition from playful kittens to more laid-back companions. While young kittens are often energetic and highly active, their personalities gradually mature as they grow into adulthood. It's important to note that a cat's temperament can also be influenced by its breed. For example, Ragdoll cats are generally known to be calm, whereas Siamese cats may remain playful even into adulthood.
The most rambunctious period for cats usually occurs during their kitten stage, between 4 to 7 months old. Their innate curiosity makes them exceptionally playful and sometimes mischievous. However, as they approach 8 months to a year old, they gradually become calmer. Neutered or spayed cats often exhibit a more subdued temperament compared to their unaltered counterparts. If a cat is particularly energetic and has not been spayed or neutered, it might not fully settle down until its middle or later years.
How to Manage a High-Energy Cat
If your cat is overly energetic, there are several strategies you can employ:
1. Distraction and Play: Use treats to redirect your cat's attention or engage them in play sessions with toys like feather wands. The movement of the wand will capture their interest, providing both mental stimulation and exercise. For added engagement, consider scattering cat treats or catnip in areas where your cat frequents to encourage them to explore and forage.
2. Consider a Companion: For unaltered cats, especially those who are still actively looking for mates, finding an opposite-sex companion might help decrease the excessive 'mating' behaviors. When cats are able to mate, their 'calling' behaviors will typically lessen. However, if you are a female cat owner, please be mindful as your female cat may soon become pregnant and if you can not accommodate this and the kittens, this method is not suggested.
