How to Determine the Age of a Sphynx Cat and When is it Considered an Adult?

Zooplus DE

We can determine the age of a Sphynx cat by observing its teeth and eyes. Generally, kittens under one year old have white tooth buds and sharp teeth. Cats between one and two years old will have some yellowing teeth. Cats between two and five years old may develop tartar, slight wear, and some yellowing of the teeth. Additionally, younger cats have clean and smooth irises, while the irises of older cats gradually become thinner with mottled pigmentation.

Examining the Teeth

Typically, kittens start to develop teeth around 14 days old, and their milk teeth are all in by 8 weeks. They begin to lose their milk incisors at 3-4 months, followed by their canines and molars between 4-5 months. By 5-8 months, all milk teeth have been replaced by permanent teeth, totaling 30. For Sphynx cats under one year, their tooth buds are white and their teeth are relatively sharp. Between one and two years, some teeth begin to yellow. From two to five years, tartar, minor wear, some yellowing, and occasional looseness of teeth may appear, increasing the likelihood of dental issues. From five to ten years, teeth show moderate wear, pigmentation, and a decreased ability to chew. By ten to fifteen years, significant tooth wear, substantial tartar buildup, tooth loss, poor chewing ability, and blunted teeth are common.

Analyzing the Eyes

We can also use a Sphynx cat’s iris to determine its age. Young cats have irises that are clean and smooth, whereas the irises of older cats become thinner with mottled pigmentation. Some older cats may develop senile iris atrophy, which manifests as irregular, linear, or hole-like shapes on the iris’s pupil margin and gaps. This condition typically appears in cats over 12 years old.

When is a Sphynx Cat Considered an Adult?

A Sphynx cat is considered an adult at 1 year old; cats under 12 months are considered kittens. Adulthood means that the cat's organs and tissues have fully developed, possessing the basic conditions for reproduction, and its physical characteristics have largely solidified with little further growth expected. Adult cats need a healthy diet to avoid health problems like heart disease or joint problems resulting from excessive weight gain.
