The Downsides of Cat Spaying/Neutering: Will They Resent Their Owners?

While cat spaying and neutering can reduce the risk of reproductive system diseases and extend their lifespan, there are also downsides. These procedures may lead to weight gain and an increased risk of bone problems. However, overall, the benefits of spaying or neutering cats outweigh the disadvantages. Moreover, cats do not hold grudges against their owners after these procedures, so owners need not worry excessively.

Potential Downsides of Cat Spaying/Neutering

1. Obesity

Before being spayed or neutered, cats have two primary physiological drives: reproduction and eating. The latter often fuels the former, with reproduction being a very energy-consuming process. After the procedure, however, the drive to reproduce disappears, allowing the drive for food to take precedence. Consequently, some cats may become overweight after being spayed or neutered.

2. Increased Risk of Bone Disease

The reproductive organs of cats secrete hormones that aid in bone development. If cats are spayed or neutered too early, these organs cease producing such hormones, leading to halted bone development. This can leave cats with a semi-mature skeleton, which may not pose issues when they are young, but significantly increases the risk of bone cancer as they age.

Will Cats Resent Their Owners After Spaying/Neutering?

After a spaying or neutering procedure, a cat might be afraid of the clinic and the vets (or even their owners) who caused the pain. However, they won’t bear a grudge. Some owners believe their cats resent them because their cat’s personality might change – a once docile cat might become irritable. This change usually stems from the post-operative pain. When a cat is in pain and touched, they feel that they are in danger and are more likely to be wary. Approaching the cat with its favorite food or treats can help to gradually reduce their defensiveness. With gentle care and time, most cats will return to their original disposition after recovery.
