Border Collie Showing Affection and How to Train Them to Bond With You

Zooplus DE

When a Border Collie recognizes you as its owner, it will display several affectionate behaviors. These include being exceptionally obedient, constantly following you, exposing their belly to you, and coming when called. These behaviors are key indicators that your Border Collie has bonded with you and accepts you as their leader.

1. Exceptional Obedience:

A dog that recognizes you as its owner will be highly obedient. Regardless of what they are doing, they will respond immediately when you call their name, and come running to you excitedly.

2. Constant Following:

Your Border Collie will follow you wherever you go, even to the bathroom. They may even stare at you while you sleep. This demonstrates a strong bond and desire to be near their owner. Furthermore, if they sense any threat towards you, they will instinctively try to protect you.

3. Exposing Their Belly:

The belly is the most vulnerable part of a dog's body. If your Border Collie rolls over and exposes their belly to you, it's a clear sign of trust and acceptance. This action signifies that they see you as their owner and someone they feel completely safe with.

4. Coming When Called:

A well-bonded Border Collie will come when called, every time. This responsiveness is a testament to their loyalty and recognition of your role as their owner.

5. Waiting for You on Outings:

When you take your dog out for exercise, a Border Collie that has accepted you as their owner will stay close to you. If they do wander off, they will look back to make sure you are still following, highlighting their need for your companionship and direction.

How to Train a Border Collie to Recognize You as Their Owner

Start from the time your Border Collie is about seven months old. To reinforce your position as the owner, always give treats and toys to your Border Collie as a reward for good behavior. Be consistent and firm in designating where your Border Collie sleeps, eats, eliminates, and plays. When going through doors, you must always go through them before your dog. Do not allow your Border Collie to sleep on your bed. When they bring you a toy, do not engage with them immediately, this can help reinforce that you are the one who initiates playtime, not the other way around.
