Zooplus DE

When Shih Tzus are sad, they may exhibit several behaviors including ignoring their owners, showing low energy, refusing to eat, and drooping their ears.

The main signs of sadness in Shih Tzus are a depressed mood, reduced appetite, drooping ears, reluctance to be active, and ignoring their owner's calls. Owners should spend more time with their dogs, gently stroking their heads and backs to comfort them. Using treats or toys can help divert their attention and prevent any physical or mental issues from prolonged sadness. It is also important to identify the reason for their sadness and take appropriate measures to resolve the issue.

Why is My Shih Tzu Tearing Up?

Several reasons can cause a Shih Tzu to tear up.

1. If your dog gets a foreign object in their eye, they may start to tear up, and their eyes may become red. This is a common reaction and should be addressed by carefully flushing their eyes with saline solution. However, if it doesn't subside, you should see a veterinarian.

2. Another cause of teary eyes could be due to internal heat or inflammation. Consider consulting with a vet for the right medication and ensure they drink plenty of water. You can also use oral solutions that helps with tear stains, like those containing chrysanthemum, cassia seed, honey, and B vitamins. These ingredients help clear heat, support liver health, reduce inflammation, and regulate porphyrin metabolism. Porphyrins are natural compounds that can cause tear stains. These solutions help reduce excessive secretions and promote the development of retinal nerve cells.

3. Eyelid hyperplasia is another reason for excessive tearing. Owners should observe if there is any third eyelid hyperplasia (cherry eye) around the corner of the eye. If present, surgery might be needed to correct the issue.

4. Ingrown eyelashes or eyelid inversion can also cause tearing and will require surgery. It’s advisable to consult with a veterinarian to diagnose the specific cause and administer appropriate treatments.
