The Jack Russell Terrier traces its lineage back to 1819 when Reverend John (Jack) Russell developed the breed. Hence, it is named after him. The Chinese Native Dog, on the other hand, is one of China's oldest indigenous breeds. They are also called "Chai Gou" in some northern regions of China because they often seek warmth by staying near firewood stoves or stacks. In the Eastern Jiangsu and Zhejiang areas, they are commonly referred to as "Cao Gou" because farmers often keep one or two as companions and guard dogs.
Physical Appearance
Jack Russell Terriers have distinct physical features. Their eyes are almond-shaped with dark eye rims. They have button ears, a flat skull, and wide spacing between the ears, gradually narrowing towards the eyes. Their muzzle is well-defined, and their jaws are very powerful with large, tightly spaced teeth that form a perfect scissor bite. In contrast, Chinese Native Dogs have a more wolf-like appearance. They have a pointed, shorter muzzle, a flat forehead, and high-set, small, erect or semi-erect ears.
Temperament and Behavior
Jack Russell Terriers are known for their friendly, albeit sometimes impulsive, personalities. They are intelligent, energetic, independent, and not prone to excessive barking. They are eager to please, and typically avoid causing trouble. Jack Russells are easily excited and possess a lively disposition. They are loyal, enjoy physical activity, and love human companionship, making them excellent watchdogs. Chinese Native Dogs are generally gentle, and not likely to initiate aggression toward humans. They can live in groups, have strong territorial instincts, are easy to care for, and display high levels of loyalty. They are also less susceptible to skin problems. Historically, they were primarily used for guarding homes and assisting with hunting in rural areas.
