Possible Causes of Swelling Below a Dog's Anus
There are two primary reasons why a dog might develop a bulge in this area. The first is an inflammation of the anal glands. If this is the cause, you should first express the fluid from the anal glands and then use anti-inflammatory medication to reduce the inflammation. The second reason could be a tumor. In this case, you need to take your dog to the vet for an examination to determine if surgical removal is necessary. Both anal gland issues and tumors are a common occurence, so it's best to seek veterinary attention if the swelling is persistant.
How to Express Your Dog's Anal Glands
The anal glands in dogs are located on either side of the anus, roughly at the four and eight o'clock positions. Each gland has a small opening on either side. To express the glands, locate them by touch, then use your thumb and index finger to apply pressure from the outside inwards toward the anus, expressing the fluid inside. The anal gland fluid has a very distinct, foul odor that is hard to get rid of, so it is best to wear gloves or use paper towels while completing the task. Anal gland fluid is primarily used by dogs for scent marking. It is continuously secreted and contains fatty particles, toxins, and intestinal waste. When this fluid accumulates and is not released, it can cause the glands to become blocked, swollen, itchy, and inflamed. If left untreated, this can escalate to anal gland rupture, causing a discharge and potential infection. Therefore, it is recommended to express a dog’s anal glands approximately every two weeks to help prevent these problems.
