What Kind of Milk Can Kittens Drink From the Supermarket, and Which is Best?

Zooplus DE

Many types of milk available in supermarkets are suitable for kittens, such as lactose-free milk. This type of milk helps avoid lactose intolerance issues in kittens, allowing for better digestion and absorption. Goat milk is also a good option, and even infant formula can be suitable for kittens without causing diarrhea.

Suitable Milk Options for Kittens

Kittens can drink lactose-free milk, such as those specifically designed for people with lactose intolerance. Many cats are lactose intolerant, and lactose-free milk is easier for them to digest. To prevent diarrhea, it is best to choose lactose-free milk for your kitten. This reduces the chances of digestive issues and allows for better nutrient absorption.

Besides lactose-free milk, you can also consider giving your kitten goat milk. Goat milk has smaller molecules, making it easy to digest and less likely to cause diarrhea. You can find pasteurized goat milk or goat milk powder in supermarkets. However, goat milk tends to be more expensive than cow's milk.

Important Notes for Feeding Kittens Milk

Before feeding, warm the milk to around 38 degrees Celsius (100.4 degrees Fahrenheit). It's essential to test the temperature by dripping a small amount on your wrist. Milk that is too cold can cause vomiting, while milk that is too hot can cause burns in your kitten’s mouth, esophagus and stomach. If using powdered formula, prepare the day's portion in advance and refrigerate it in a glass container. When it's feeding time, warm only the required amount to avoid spoilage due to temperature fluctuations.
