Dental examination is one of the most reliable methods for determining a cat's age. Kittens typically transition from their milk teeth to permanent teeth between 6 to 8 months old. Additionally, cats exhibit distinct characteristics at various life stages. We can also assess a cat's age by observing its eyes, weight, and behavioral responses.

How to Determine a Cat's Age
1. Eyes
Kittens generally begin to open their eyes around two weeks after birth. If a kitten's eyes are still closed, it is likely about a week old. If the kitten's eyes are open, its ears are perked up, and its milk teeth are emerging, it's likely around one month old. Young cats usually have clear, bright eyes, but as they age, the color can slightly shift. Older cats' eyes may appear cloudy and less vibrant.
2. Weight
A cat's weight can also provide clues to its age. Newborn kittens weigh approximately 100 to 120 grams. By 1 to 2 weeks, their weight increases to 170 to 230 grams. At 2 to 3 weeks, they weigh around 300 to 350 grams, and at 3 to 4 weeks, about 350 to 400 grams. From 4 weeks to 2 months, they typically weigh between 400 to 700 grams. At 3 months, they can weigh between 2 to 4 pounds.
3. Behavioral Responses
During the first two weeks of life, a kitten's primary activities are nursing, sleeping, and being assisted by their mother for defecation. After two weeks, kittens slowly begin to open their eyes and start learning to crawl. By four weeks to two months, kittens can walk steadily and begin to learn to run, climb, jump, and teeth. At three months, kittens are usually weaned, tend to be very affectionate and like to chew on things. At six months, cats may display behaviors such as heat cycles, meowing, and inappropriate urination. Adult cats gradually develop an independent and stable temperament, are energetic, and enjoy interacting with their owners.
4. Teeth
Examining a cat's teeth is the most accurate way to estimate its age. Kittens start developing teeth around 14 days old; however, these early teeth are uneven and not uniformly aligned. By 2 to 4 weeks, kittens will generally have all 26 of their milk teeth. Between 6 to 8 months old, all their milk teeth will be replaced by 30 permanent teeth.
