1. Cold or Fever
If your Whippet suddenly stops eating and is lethargic, along with a dry or hot nose and abnormal body temperature, they might have a cold or fever. You should check their temperature. For a cold, you can give them a reduced dose of children's cold medicine and keep them warm. If they have a fever, administer anti-inflammatory medication, and you can also apply alcohol to their paw pads and belly to help lower their temperature.
2. Extreme Boredom or Depression
Sudden lethargy and refusal to eat could also stem from a lack of stimulation and boredom. This often happens when owners neglect to play with their dogs or consider their needs. To address this, spend more time taking your Whippet for walks and engaging in physical activities. Once their life becomes more interesting, their appetite and energy should return to normal.
3. Gastroenteritis
If your Whippet suddenly stops eating, becomes lethargic, and experiences vomiting and diarrhea, be cautious of gastroenteritis. If confirmed, withhold food and water for 24 hours, then administer anti-inflammatory medication. Two hours later, provide probiotics. If symptoms persist for three days, seek veterinary care.
4. Canine Distemper or Parvovirus
Loss of appetite and excessive sleep can also indicate canine distemper or parvovirus. These are typically accompanied by eye and nasal discharge, repeated vomiting and diarrhea, and elevated temperature. You can purchase testing kits to use at home. Immediate veterinary attention is required if these diseases are confirmed.
