Dachshund Growth Chart: A Month-by-Month Guide (1-12 Months)

Zooplus DE

At one month old, a Dachshund puppy is still nursing and quite small. Around two months, weaning begins, and their puppy teeth start to emerge. By three months, you can generally start to assess the puppy's breed characteristics. The period between four and eight months marks a phase of rapid growth, and by nine to twelve months, the Dachshund's size typically stabilizes.

Month 1: The Newborn Stage

A one-month-old Dachshund puppy is entirely dependent on its mother's milk. It will be small and appear quite rounded, without fully displaying the distinctive Dachshund features we know. This is a crucial period for bonding and initial development.

Month 2: Weaning and First Teeth

Around two months, weaning from the mother's milk begins, and the puppy starts to gain weight noticeably. Their puppy teeth start to erupt and their limbs will begin to lengthen, making them less rounded.

Month 3: Assessing Breed Characteristics

By three months, you can better evaluate the puppy's physical attributes that are specific to the Dachshund breed. This is a good time to get a sense of their long bodies and short legs starting to take shape.

Months 4-8: Rapid Growth Phase

The months between four and eight represent a rapid growth phase for Dachshunds. During this period, they may experience teething as their baby teeth are replaced by adult teeth. If you have a male Dachshund, his testicles should descend into the scrotum during this time.

Months 9-12: Stabilizing Size

From nine to twelve months, the Dachshund's size will generally stabilize. At this stage, significant changes in their physical dimensions are unlikely. However, their weight can still fluctuate depending on their diet and exercise habits, so it's important to maintain a balanced lifestyle for your dog to avoid obesity or being underweight.
