Shih Tzus do not need a puppy cut. Their puppy coat will naturally be replaced by their adult coat over time. During this young age, their immune system is still developing, and it's generally not recommended to shave them. Instead of shaving, you can maintain your Shih Tzu's appearance through regular brushing, and trimming specific areas like the abdomen, paws, rear, and around the mouth.
As Shih Tzus grow, their puppy coat will naturally shed and be replaced by their adult coat. This is a gradual process, and owners should avoid rushing it by shaving the puppy coat. Dogs rely on their fur for protection, and completely shaving it can leave them vulnerable, especially in extreme weather conditions. Shaving a young Shih Tzu can compromise their immune system, making them susceptible to illness. Therefore, you should not allow a groomer to convince you otherwise. Furthermore, shaving equipment can damage the hair follicles and lead to skin allergies. Without fur, dogs are more prone to skin injuries from scratching. Therefore, shaving a Shih Tzu puppy coat is not recommended.
How to Groom Your Dog
1. Regular Brushing
Your dog's fur should be brushed at least once daily. Select pet-specific brushes appropriate for your dog's coat type. When brushing a puppy, gently brush in the direction of hair growth, usually starting from the head and moving to the tail. Carefully work through any tangles without pulling. If the knots are severe, you may carefully cut them out, making sure you do not harm the dog’s skin.
2. Brushing
Brushing is different from combing. The primary difference is the tools used. Combing uses a stainless-steel pin brush, while brushing utilizes a bristle brush. Brushing helps to stimulate the puppy’s skin, encouraging a protective layer that can resist external irritation and make their fur softer and fluffier.
3. Trimming
Trimming is essential for areas often overlooked, like the abdomen, paws, rear, and around the mouth. This prevents matting, tangles, dirt accumulation, and slipping, contributing to your dog’s overall grooming and appearance.
