The Ideal Age for Breeding Springer Spaniels
Generally speaking, it's best to wait until a Springer Spaniel is at least 12 months old before considering breeding. This usually coincides with their second heat cycle. At this point, their skeletal structure is typically more developed, reducing the risks associated with pregnancy and delivery, especially for females. This ensures the health of the mother and the wellbeing of her puppies.
Timing Breeding for Optimal Success
Even when your Springer Spaniel is of appropriate age, it's crucial to time the breeding carefully. It is best not to breed immediately at the beginning of the heat cycle, ideally waiting about a week into the cycle. This timing coincides with a higher chance of successful conception, as the female dog is more likely to be ovulating. To further ensure success, it is generally advised to breed the female twice, with two days in between the breeding sessions. After a successful mating, some signs that she may be pregnant include a decrease in appetite, increased sleepiness and her mammary glands growing.
