It typically takes around 20 days after mating to start noticing signs of pregnancy in a Corgi. At this stage, you might observe changes like enlarged nipples and mammary gland development. However, it's recommended to take your Corgi to the vet for an ultrasound around 30 days post-mating for a definitive confirmation.
About a week after successful mating, a female Corgi may experience a shrinking vulva and a small discharge of dark brown fluid. There might also be a decrease in appetite. Around 20 days post-mating, you'll likely see the nipples become more prominent and mammary glands start to develop. By about a month, the abdomen may appear swollen, the breasts will droop, the nipples will feel more elastic, and the mammary glands will gradually enlarge. Some dogs may even start producing milk, and experience rapid weight gain and increased urination. While these symptoms are highly suggestive of pregnancy, a possibility of false pregnancy exists. An ultrasound examination at around 30 days post-mating can confirm the presence of puppies. If no pups are visible in an ultrasound performed about 30 days after mammary gland development, the dog is likely not pregnant. During pregnancy, a Corgi needs not only adequate nutrition but also moderate exercise.
Corgi Pregnancy Care Tips
1. Nutrition is Key: A pregnant Corgi requires a diet rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals. Calcium intake should be increased significantly, and cold water should be avoided to prevent gastrointestinal upset.
2. Environment Matters: Ensure the Corgi's whelping area is well-ventilated, clean, and dry. In winter, it should be warm, while in summer, it needs to be cool. Although pregnant Corgis may seem lazy, they need to be encouraged to have moderate exercise to build strength for labor. Avoid excessive exercise to prevent harm during pregnancy.
3. Handling with Care: As the pregnancy progresses, the Corgi's belly will grow quite large. To avoid putting pressure on the abdomen, avoid picking her up unless absolutely necessary and give her ample space to feel secure.
