How Soon Can You Tell If a Shetland Sheepdog is Pregnant After Mating?

Zooplus DE

It typically takes around 20 days after mating to start noticing potential signs of pregnancy in a Shetland Sheepdog. At this stage, you might observe changes such as enlarged nipples and mammary gland development. For a definitive confirmation, it's recommended to take your dog to a veterinary clinic for an ultrasound examination at approximately 30 days post-mating.

Early Signs of Pregnancy in Shetland Sheepdogs

Within about a week after successful mating, a female Shetland Sheepdog may exhibit a few subtle changes. You might notice a slight shrinking of the vulva, the presence of a small amount of dark brownish discharge, and a possible decrease in appetite. These initial signs can be easily missed, so observing your dog closely is crucial. Around 20 days post-mating, more apparent signs emerge, such as the nipples becoming more prominent and the mammary glands starting to develop. These are more reliable indicators of potential pregnancy.

Later-Stage Pregnancy Indicators

Approximately one month after mating, several changes become more pronounced. The abdomen may begin to swell, the breasts may sag, and the nipples become more elastic. The mammary glands will continue to enlarge, and it's even possible that milk may be expressed. A rapid weight gain and an increased frequency of urination are also common. These symptoms usually indicate pregnancy; however, there is a possibility of false pregnancy (pseudopregnancy). To confirm pregnancy definitively, a B-ultrasound check can be done around day 30. If you don’t detect fetal development through an ultrasound within 30 days after the mammary gland enlargement and other symptoms, there is a good chance your dog is not pregnant.

Important Considerations During Pregnancy

During pregnancy, besides ensuring your dog receives an adequate amount of nutrition, she still requires an appropriate amount of exercise to maintain a healthy weight and avoid complications. Consult with your veterinarian about the ideal diet and exercise regime for your pregnant Shetland Sheepdog.
